I have a decade of experience working across strategic communications, research and policy in government, not-for-profits and universities. I’ve written, edited and evaluated documents of all types, from detailed research reports, submissions and instructional guides through to newsletters, brochures, web pages and infographics.
While I’ve always cared about good writing, my commitment to plain English crystallised during my time in the consumer sector, where clear communication is indispensable for informing consumers and influencing industry and government. Since then, I’ve found that for factual writing of all types and for all audiences, a plain English approach is almost always best. I have postgraduate diplomas in Publishing and Communications (Melbourne) and Applied Social Research (Monash), as well as a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) (UQ).
I'm a member of Editors Victoria and work to the Institute of Professional Editors’ Australian standards for editing practice. I keep up-to-date with international plain language research and practice and belong to both the Plain Language Association InterNational (PLAIN) and Clarity, the international association promoting plain legal language.
